ISRO has announced a project to launch India’s first solar power satellite (SPS-1), which will collect solar energy in space and beam it to Earth using microwave transmission. This technology, already in experimental phases in China and Japan, promises 24/7 solar energy without weather dependence. The SPS-1 will be launched by 2027 into geostationary orbit. It will power a prototype receiver station in Gujarat, capable of supplying electricity to 300 homes. The initiative is being led by ISRO in collaboration with IIT Madras and private sector energy firms.
